Building an online business is not all it’s cracked up to be some days. It’s true that many days can be really fun and rewarding…and other days not so much. You are going to spend time trying to overcome obstacles.
Images of people with a laptop and a cocktail relaxing at the beach is hardly a common reality.
Most of us would never let our laptops anywhere near salt, sand or water…lol.
The real scoop is that every busy online entrepreneur is going to encounter obstacles.
Some obstacles are going to be small, while other obstacles feel insurmountable.
But that doesn’t mean that they can’t be overcome.
Making tweaks to your online business can help you overcome obstacles.
By making some changes, you’ll be able to press forward and find success.
However, before you can fix what needs repairing, you have to identify the problem areas.
This requires brutal truth and honesty about what’s holding you back, even if it’s your own mindset.
Once you’ve pinpointed what’s wrong in your online business, you’ll be able to implement a plan of action to heal those areas and bring them up to speed in how they should perform and deliver for you.
Confidence Building Tasks to Help You Succeed
A lack of confidence can stall an online business because when you don’t feel like you can do something, it can have a paralyzing effect.
I can relate because overthinking about the problems can cause what’s called analysis paralysis and keep you from getting anything accomplished.
This can create even more fear and it becomes a viscous cycle.
However, there are some things you can do to overcome fear and gain confidence.
Fear is something that many online entrepreneurs battle.
It happens to us all, at some point in our journey.
You can probably relate.
So, why does this happen?
It’s because you’re afraid of what might happen. You’re afraid of looking foolish, of failing, or of having to give up on your dreams.
You’re afraid of disappointing yourself or other people, if your online business fails.
Make Fear into Something Constructive
The way to get past this is to use the fear as a positive resource to help you build confidence.
Look at it as stretching yourself, improving yourself… instead of something that you react to negatively.
Turn the tables on that fear and make it into something constructive, instead of destructive.
There are different ways that you can do this.
One is by gaining small wins.
For example, it might be that you haven’t reached the point where you have built a large mailing list yet.
But you have created your newsletter template.
That’s a small win.
It could be that you haven’t completed a project yet, but you do have several key pieces of it done.
That’s another small win.
Each of these small steps moves you away from fear and toward confidence because you can see the tasks that you’ve accomplished that are working to build your business.
These steps give you repeated progress in many different areas.
Each time you complete a step, it lets you feel better than you would if you tried to go from newbie to a massive product launch all at once.
You’re building your confidence over time and getting more comfortable with the steps that you do take.
You gain A LOT of momentum in the small steps and it’s that momentum that keeps you moving forward in your online business.
Tell Yourself that YOU CAN Do It is the Great Way to Overcome Obstacles
Something else that you can do is to tell yourself that you can do this, instead of declaring that you can’t.
Replace thoughts of fear or lack of confidence with a more positive mindset. It doesn’t do you or anyone else any good to talk down about yourself.
Change how you view yourself and your ability to succeed.
Change the narrative of your self-talk when you tell yourself that you can.
Instead of “I can’t”, your self-talk becomes “I can”.
To build confidence, you can also offer your services for free to a limited number of people.
The purpose of doing this is to gain valuable feedback.
Plus, this allows you to gain commendations for your expertise. This will boost your reputation as an online entrepreneur, too.
You may be someone who has very little confidence in your abilities and you may doubt yourself each step of the way as you try to build an online business.
You might struggle to do things that will build your confidence.
Maybe even telling yourself that you can do it isn’t giving you the confidence that you need just yet.
If that’s the case, you just have to go forward anyway.
Sometimes, you have to face your fear and take on the tasks you need to do while you’re afraid. Doing this will allow you to see that nothing bad happens.
You will see that what you feared wasn’t something that materialized and became a reality.
Most things you worry about don’t ever happen.
Teach Yourself the Best Way to Learn
An obstacle that often gets in the way of building a business is one that’s related to learning.
It can be frustrating knowing that you need to master something, yet you can’t seem to grasp it through learning.
Everyone is going to experience a different kind of learning obstacle. Some people don’t absorb information the same way that another person does.
What comes across as easy to one person will be extremely difficult for another.
If that sounds like you, it doesn’t mean that you’re not capable or that you’re any less smarter than the next person.
It only means that your learning style is different and that’s what’s causing you to have obstacles.
Not everyone can learn through the same type of media. It’s okay if you can’t absorb as well using video format. You can choose audio and listen to podcasts.
Or, you can learn by reading the necessary materials.
That’s why I really love communities and resources that offer tutorials in both text, video and live webinars and always have a way for members to ask questions and get answers.
See the first two resources on this page for the best places that provide this to their members.
When it comes to learning new things and new skill sets…the first thing you should do is just take things slow.
You don’t have to try to learn everything at once. That might overwhelm you.
You might come across a resource full of information that you need to know.
Maybe it’s a video course that’s an hour long.
You don’t have to sit through the entire video all at one time.
You can break it down into watch sessions of 10 minutes each or whatever amount of time that works for you.
You can also re-watch the video as many times as needed, until you are comfortable with the information.
As you learn from your resource, you can implement the material being taught and follow along.
It’s also good to pause the video, do the step, and resume the video.
For example, some online entrepreneurs will learn and complete step one, then go back to the video, watch step two, then implement that one.
Not every person conducting the tutorial is going to be the same.
Each one will have a unique style of teaching the information.
One of them may not work as well for you as a different one would.
That’s why it’s okay to start a course and stop it and start over, if it’s not working for you.
Some people think they need to stick with something until the end, even if they don’t understand.
But only you know whether or not you are absorbing the information and just need to go slower or revisit the information more than once.
If you simply rush through just trying to keep up the pace, then you are basically wasting your time, if you haven’t actually learned what you set out to learn.
You may like learning things at a fast pace and that’s okay too.
As long as the end result is gaining understanding and a new skill set.
The time of day can matter, too. If you’re someone who learns easier at night, nothing says you have to try to force yourself to learn during the day.
As a night owl…I save all of the things that require more concentration for the afternoon and evening, if I can help it.
If you have a time that works best for you, then work the learning process around your best schedule.
Committing to Your Plans Will Help You Overcome Obstacles
Sometimes, it’s easy to get sidelined when you’re trying to build an online business if you fail to commit to your plans.
This can happen when people get frustrated or weary or they run into obstacles that make them want to give up.
If you don’t commit to your plans, then you could find yourself giving up right when you were on the cusp of success.
You don’t want that to happen.
And think of it this way…
Would you give up if you were working for someone else?
No, because you would likely be shown the door.
You have to commit and follow through as an employee, if you want to keep your job.
Start thinking of yourself as not just the boss, but you are working for yourself as your own employee, so to speak.
Make yourself live up to yourself, the same as you would for a boss at a job.
To ensure that you give your online business a chance, take some commitment steps.
One thing you can do is to make milestones that you have to achieve before you let yourself change course – and that includes giving up.
Commit that you’re going to reach these milestones before you even entertain stopping or changing direction.
See things though first, then assess how it’s going.
Sometimes what throws people off is they get an idea and then immediately launch into a change.
They head a new direction or take on something new that doesn’t even resemble their original idea or plan.
That can cause you to have a lack of commitment toward your online business and can stall growth or even cause you to not even get out of the starting gate at all.
I used to change my mind all the time, even about silly things like the theme or look of my website.
The look of your website makes no difference at all if you never get around to creating the content for your website.
A pretty website with no content and no visitors is not going to lead to online success.
So, if you do get an idea, let it sit for a while.
Don’t make a decision or change course for days or even a week before moving on it.
You also want to make sure that you know the true reason why you’re changing.
More often than not, the reason could be based on a whim.
Sometimes, you can get caught up in the desire to do something new or different just because someone else is doing it.
They make it look good or easy. Because of their success, you get tempted by that.
What you need to realize is that the different courses or options are always going to be there for you.
So instead of switching and trying something else out, follow through with what you were doing to begin with and stop trying to follow what other people are doing.
And definitely stop comparing yourself to others.
Just continue on with your plans.
Then after you’ve accomplished those plans, then you can check out the other path to see if it’s something that you’re truly interested in.
For online entrepreneurs, building your niche is one of the keys to having a successful online business.
It can be easy to feel like you should start a second niche and just let go of the first one.
OMGosh! Been there. Done that.
I don’t recommend it.
Always follow through with your chosen niche and bring that to the level you want before you even think about developing another niche.
Working on more than one niche isn’t the best way to create momentum and reach success.
You will spread yourself and your efforts way too thing and nothing will succeed.
Instead, what you want to do is to build your niche first, get it off the ground and then add a second niche.
But don’t abandon or reduce time on the first one just to have more than one.
Most of us are interested in more than one topic, but that does not mean that you need to tackle them all at the same time.
Don’t Allow Money to Be an Excuse
Starting an online business can be a daunting idea for those who believe that they don’t have the funds they need to get it off the ground.
But you don’t want to let money be an excuse.
There’s always a way around any obstacle standing in your way – and that includes not having enough money.
There are different business models that you can choose to use that don’t require you to have upfront money.
But in all reality…an online business in just about any model is a lot more affordable than opening a brick and mortar business offline.
With online, you could decide to start an online business one day and be up and running the next day if you want.
Some of these business models are ones like affiliate marketing.
There is nothing stopping you from getting an online affiliate marketing business started today, if you wanted.
Since setting up a website costs a small amount of money, you could instead choose to do affiliate marketing using social media.
Social media platforms are free.
You could use these for awhile with absolutely nothing out of pocket.
You would simply need to learn how to do this type of marketing and you would need to study how to effectively use whichever platform you pick.
You have to keep in mind that you have no real control over your online business via 3rd party platforms, like social media.
You can be shut down at the flip of a switch.
It’s ultimately better to have your own asset online that you control…your own real estate via a domain name, hosting and a website.
To get a domain name for your website is very inexpensive. Hosting is also very inexpensive as well.
Since 2012, I have done all of this – domains, websites and hosting – through this resource here.
You can also self-publish on Kindle. That doesn’t cost anything, either.
The program even checks free of charge to make sure the book fits their parameters.
All you have to do is write the content.
As for book covers, you can even make eBook covers for free.
But, you still really need a website if you’re going to publish and market your books and establish your author brand.
You don’t have to, but if you want to get exposure for your Kindle books, you will want to have a place online that people can find you, besides a Bio profile on Amazon.
Having your own domain, website and hosting is a lot cheaper than buying a high-end cup of coffee daily at the local shop.
So, there really is no excuse.
There will be tools you’ll need to run your business.
But you can even find those for free.
You can use a free resource such as Canva for graphics.
I use Canva quite often.
Over the years, I have mostly used the free version, but recently upgraded so that I can have access to everything on there…all the images, backgrounds, etc.
A resource like Canva will enable you to create social media images, blog images, YouTube thumbnails, eBook covers and even written content such as worksheets or printables.
You can sign up for a free autoresponder account for your online business marketing so that you can do email marketing.
Many companies will allow you a free account of up to 500 subscribers, before you would need to upgrade.
I have a couple of the main services listed on my resources page.
An autoresponder will allow you to create your mailing list for people to sign up for as well as to create special campaigns when you have a product or service launch.
Another way that you can find the money you need for your online business is to save up.
If you decide that you want to start an online business or begin a specific task like online video production, six months from now then curb unnecessary spending now in preparation to do those things.
By tightening your spending habits, you can put back enough money to launch your online business.
If you need content for your business, but you don’t feel that you have the writing skills to take care of that, then you’ll have to get the content elsewhere.
You don’t have to hire a specific ghostwriter who works just for you, which can cost you more.
Instead, you can use content like PLR (private label rights), which is already available and costs much less.
Keep in mind, that you would only want to use PLR as a base for your content.
Basically, use it as a starting point, so that you are not looking at a blank screen, trying to write content from scratch.
You would need to edit it, add to it, subtract from it….basically rewrite it in your own voice.
Never publish PLR as-is, even if it’s from a provider that writes well and provides high-quality content.
You want your content to be different because other people have access to that same PLR content and many people have already published that same content as-is online.
Your content will never be ranked by the search engines if you publish it as-is.
It’s better to write your own content from scratch, but if you do decide to use PLR keep these things in mind.
So in short, only use PLR as a base and use it to create a whole new piece of content. It’s worth it to spend the time to do this.
Once it’s published, it’s done and out there and so you want to make sure it’s the best content.
Develop Better Time Management Skills to Overcome Obstacles
You might think that you don’t have time to work on your business and this has become an obstacle for you.
Without being able to get anything done or taking too long to accomplish tasks, your business ends up stalling.
But that doesn’t mean this is an obstacle that can’t be overcome.
There are several steps that you can implement that will help you to either find more time or develop better time management skills.
Start out by learning how to work without distractions. Distractions can happen when you don’t have a plan to manage your time.
The night before, create a to-do list that details the most important tasks you need to accomplish.
Seeing what you need to get done can help cut back on distractions that steal your time.
Don’t try to split your focus.
Multi-tasking can make it easy to be distracted because your mind is flitting from task to task and you’re never fully concentrating on one.
A lot of us are used to multi-tasking because we were expected to do it for an employer, but it’s really not the best way to work.
It’s harder for your brain to maintain focus when you’re working on several things at once.
Turn off any social media alerts or email alerts that you get and also turn off your phone’s notification sound.
That way, you’re not tempted just to check whatever is demanding your attention. When you’re working online, other sites can be a distraction and steal your time.
What you can do if you have difficulty not wasting your time, is to download a time saving app.
I simply just close all browsers, except the ones that I’m actively working with or on.
It’s easy to not manage your time when you’re checking your email and it can be a big distraction.
Some people check their email repeatedly throughout the day and this can disrupt your attention and cut down on your productivity.
Instead, pick a set time when you’re going to check your email.
For example, check it when you first start working, mid day and then again before you’re done with the day.
And keep it to a set amount of time to check and respond, so that you’re not still doing this an hour or two later because you lost track of time.
Anything that’s not urgent, don’t respond to it until you’ve accomplished your tasks.
Again, work in focused time blocks.
This can help manage your time because you’re bundling tasks into a specific group of time.
For example, you might schedule 9:30-10:30am (or p.m.) to respond to emails or to call your clients or work on a project.
Using time blocks lets you focus on what has to be done within a certain range of time.
It also lets you pencil in scheduled breaks such as lunch or time with your family.
This is especially important if you’re working from home where there are a million and one distractions.
If you feel like you need to find time, there are ways that you can do that, too.
Most people don’t even realize they waste a lot of time.
For example, in the mornings you might be taking half an hour to an hour to watch the news or play on your phone.
Maybe use that time to accomplish one small task for your online business.
You can also find time to work on your business during your lunch break at your offline job, but I personally feel that you need to have a break to eat and refresh.
Otherwise, you will just burn yourself out and not want to work on your online business.
This goes for whether you are at work outside of the home or if you work at home.
Even though I work from home full-time as an affiliate marketer, I do make myself stop working to eat.
I stop and stretch.
I stop to do lightexercise.
I stop to take a short nap if necessary, to manage some physical health challenges that I have to monitor.
I stop to play with my cats and take care of what they need, which is not hard actually because they will stare a hole into my head or start getting into things or meowing incessantly, until I meet their demands. 😺
You can also try and figure in some time on the weekends.
Even if you are busy on the weekends or you have to work your job on the weekends….even working on your online business in multiple 10 to 15 minute blocks of time will be helpful.
You’ll be able to get a lot more done than you think you can because all that effort really adds up, especially if you are being consistent.
So, be mindful of making the time to work on your online business.
You’ll thank yourself later.
Thanks for stopping by and have a great day 🙂
To Your Success,
Resources for Online Success
As a free spirit, I always had the deep desire to break free from the cubicle-zombie-robot world and have full control over my time, income and life, without having to have permission from a boss.
I was tired of being just another “number” that was expendable, no matter how dependable I was or how hard I worked (just to help build someone else’s wealth and make their dreams come true).
I wanted to create MY freedom…not build it for someone else.
Unexpectedly in 2008, severe neck issues forced me out of the 9 to 5 corporate world rat race (before I was actually ready financially, which really sucked a lot and was pretty scary).
It’s better to have a 2nd income already rolling and coming in regularly before losing your main source of income, but I had no control over what happened.
After spending years trying to figure out how to make money online (all on my own) and only being able to make a few dollars here and there…I started using some great resources that made it all easier.
I now use these resources to increase my income daily.
I enjoy earning recurring monthly income using the affiliate marketing business model because I can work from anywhere and on my own schedule, while being able to take care of my health.
I share this with you so you will know it is possible to make money online and have total freedom from the 9-5 grind.
